Medical Care Classes Offered for Health Care Workers, Police

"A Providence firefighter has launched a new training school that teaches everyone from SWAT team members to pediatric nurses everything from  basic CPR to how to provide advanced life support in a crisis situation.

Fernando Nino launched the school in March 2013. It's named Asclepius Training, after the ancient Greek god of medicine and healing. (That's the god associated with the rod that had a serpent wrapped around it, which has become a universal symbol for health care.)

One of Nino's key selling points is that his business is mobile; he will come to employers and offer training on site, a convenience that also averts the need for any overtime payments.

His potential client base is broad. It includes local doctor's offices, first responders, SWAT teams, and even members of the military. The classes Nino offers are equally wide-ranging. Most involve courses that professionals in the health care industry, law enforcement, or other professions need to maintain their certifications.

For example, doctors and nurses who deal with children need to be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, or PALS. Nino offers a two day in-office course that would allow them to be re-certified.

He also teaches courses for certifications in CPR, first aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). And those are just for people who work directly in the health care industry. Nino also teaches courses on EMS worker and babysitter safety, wilderness emergency care, and Tactical Combat Casualty Care."

All told, Nino offers more than a dozen classes, which he teaches along with two other instructors and fellow firefighters (one from in-state, but another community, the other from Massachusetts).

Nino himself has a long resume of certifications that qualify him as an expert instructor. He holds licenses as an EMT-Cardiac, and as a state and national EMS instructor coordinator. He also is licensed as an instructor through The American Heart Association, American Safety & Health Institute, and National Association of EMT's.

Nino is now in his 14th year as a Providence firefighter. He has been teaching safety courses since 2008. After teaching for a few years, Nino said he realized he had a knack for teaching and decided to expand his work.

"I know that I'm good at it. I love the EMS field," Nino said. "It's something that I'm able to give back to the people."

So far, Nino estimates that as many as 300 people have been through his courses in the year that he has been in business -- and he only hopes to grow further from there.

Prices for classes range from $25 to $250. group discounts are also available. A full list of courses, with more information on each one, is available on his Web site: Classes are offered on an as-needed basis, according to Nino. To register for a class, he can be reached at 866-629-6882."
